The selection of the optimal insulant and the appropriate insulation system is “Mission Critical”! Engineers, specifiers, owners, and stakeholders are becoming increasingly vigilant regarding what information is relevant, what information is factual, is there full disclosure, and is data validated by an independent laboratory? These concerns dictate a second or even third look at optimizing lifecycle risk and performance – steps beyond lifecycle cost. This article considers the role of the insulant and the insulation system in these efforts since they have a substantial impact on lifecycle cost (material/labor capital cost), long term operation and maintenance costs, and on lifecycle performance and risk.
