Dyplast releases new Polyiso vs. XPS Technical Bulletin

Dyplast released its latest Technical Bulletin 0418 which is an update to the 0214 Bulletin on Polyiso versus XPS in low temperature pipe insulation applications. Whereas the previous version was focused primarily on examining the cost of insulation systems versus energy savings and long-term performance of polyisocyanurate (polyiso or PIR) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulants in refrigeration and chilled water applications, this more recent Bulletin revision is more-so focused on the misinformation and/or lack of full disclosure so prevalent in the marketplace. Dyplast aggressively advocates for:
  • honest presentation of physical properties and pertinent information, yet also
  • full-disclosure, complemented with
  • third-party verification and audit of physical properties and the quality process.

Dyplast's latest Customer Bulletin, 0717 - ISO-C1® Polyisocyanurate Insulation Flame Spread and Smoke Development

Dyplast's latest Customer Bulletin, 0717 - ISO-C1® Polyisocyanurate Insulation Flame Spread and Smoke Development, is another in a series of white papers aimed at providing our clients, engineers, contractors, fabricators, and friends with objective information on competitive products and on items that affect our industry.
Marketing literature for insulation products on the internet and in printed media often address the flame spread index (FSI) and smoke developed index (SDI) as measured in accordance with ASTM E84 or comparable standards. This updated (0909) Customer Bulletin provides factual, clarifying information concerning ISO-C1's FSI and SDI as well as other important points relating to the combustion properties of polyisocyanurate foam.

On May 30, 2017 Dyplast sent to our readership another related document, the reprint of the American Chemistry Council's Center for the Polyurethanes Industry, Question and Answer: Smoke Toxicity document. The document contains two sections, General Information on Smoke Toxicity followed by a section with Information Specific to Polyurethane Products.

Clearing the Air…on Polyurethane’s Smoke Toxicity

In Dyplast Products, LLC continuing effort to provide our customers with accurate information about our ISO-C1® family of products, we are sending out the American Chemistry Council's Center for the Polyurethanes Industry, Question and Answer: Smoke Toxicity document. The document contains two sections, General Information on Smoke Toxicity followed by a section with Information Specific to Polyurethane Products.

The document in a Q&A format makes, two important points about polyurethane combustion products: that combustion decomposition toxicity products are not unique as compared to other common synthetic or natural materials, and that polyurethanes do not present a greater health risk than fires involving synthetic or natural materials.

Dyplast believe that this informative document should dispel some commonly misunderstood beliefs concerning Polyurethane combustion products.

Dyplast publishes new article, "Insulation Installation" in LNG magazine

The fifth Dyplast article published in LNG Industry magazine is entitled "Insulation Installation". Dyplast has devoted significant resources to producing and providing the insulation industry with in depth analysis and explanation of leading industry issues through its articles in LNG magazine. Previous Articles include...

Below is an exerpt of the new article..."Insulation Installation"

"Failures at a new LNG facility during the first few months of initial operations can be expensive and cause damage to a company's image. Therefore, most companies do everything possible to ensure a 'perfect start-up', but this is easier said than done. Identifying what may ultimately cause problems is a first step to controlling and eliminating those problems. Although it may be challenging to anticipate the main reasons for forced shutdowns or curtailments during the first months of operation, poor design and installation of the insulation system are clearly on the list.

While many of the principles that are discussed are applicable to any insulant, this article focuses on polyisocyanurate (polyiso) and cellular glass (cell glass), since there is more long-term experience with those insulants, with successful service, with no failures over periods of 20 years and more."

Dyplast publishes New "Ted TALK" series of Insulation industry conversations

Ted TALK:

Mechanical Insulation Value Chain:

I actively encourage my staff's dialogues with individuals and companies up, down, and across the value chain for mechanical insulation for low-temperature pipe and equipment. ISO-C1® polyisocyanurate is of course Dyplast's brand, yet this blog is generic. You may ask me "why exert so much effort to engage all these conversations?" My answer, which I hope is echoed below, is we each benefit and the industry benefits!

The value chain for the End-User (typically the Asset Owner) ends when the optimal insulation system is finally installed. Yet where does it begin, and where can it be broken? Frankly, the value chain has many participants and the more players there are, the higher the risk.

This first Ted Talk blog on the subject of Value Chain focuses on Installation Contractors, who clearly play key roles and each of whom can be considered the last cog in this value chain. They are often the final contractors squeezed by schedules, blamed for late commissioning, and when a system's thermal performance is "less than design" can be sued.

When Dyplast calls or visits an Installation Contractor we're almost always welcomed openly and with respect. Then when the conversation is all business we hear:

"We only "put on" what we're told"
"We're just basically a middleman"
"We do not actually buy the insulation"
"We don't write the specs"
"But what can we do?"

My general response is:

"Like it or not you each know you have potential liability!"
"Wouldn't it be better to know that what you are putting on is of the highest quality?"
I relate the story when I was asked by an "old time" player "why did Dyplast do all that testing?" My reply was "I really like to sleep at night."

If you've been so kind to read my blog thus far, I guess you know I can be a bit long on words. Indeed!  Yet in my own defense - - this is a complex subject. I will strive to use more sound-bites. Don't hold your breath!

Respectfully
Ted Berglund
President

Dyplast “Mission Critical” Article in LNG Industry Magazine

Dyplast examines the role of the insulation system in optimizing value in LNG Facilities!

Dyplast CEO Ted Berglund and VP of Sales and Marketing Joe Hughes just published an article in the “July/August” issue of LNG Industry magazine which examines the importance of due diligence when choosing a cryogenic insulation system that will optimize value in LNG Facilities. The selection of the optimal insulant and the appropriate insulation system is “Mission Critical”! Engineers, specifiers, owners, and stakeholders are becoming increasingly vigilant regarding what information is relevant, what information is factual, is there full disclosure, and is data validated by an independent laboratory? These concerns dictate a second or even third look at optimizing lifecycle risk and performance – steps beyond lifecycle cost. This article considers the role of the insulant and the insulation system in these efforts since they have a substantial impact on lifecycle cost (material/labor capital cost), long term operation and maintenance costs, and on lifecycle performance and risk.

Dyplast’s ISO-C1® 2.5 # polyisocyanurate foam clearly supports stakeholder objectives and concerns since it meets or exceeds not only the latest requirements of ASTM C591-15 but also CINI-2014 specifications; and ISO-C1® has a long history of success at LNG facilities globally.
