Dyplast Products Releases - QWIK GUIDE: GeoFoam (Geo-Technical EPS)

Dyplast Products recently issued another a one-page Qwik Guide on Dyplast® EPS GeoFoam. What is Geofoam? It is a large expanded polystyrene (EPS) rigid foam block, typically used as a light-weight/high-strength structural replacement for soil in geo-technical projects as shown in our case study entitled GeoFoam Project: Sharpes Ferry Bridge or as structural alternatives in applications such as stadium seating and swimming pool foundations in Florida's high-rise hotels and residences.  Dyplast GeoFoam is approximately 1% of the weight of most sandy and/or average moisture soils, and is particularly advantageous in applications where proper soil alternatives.

This Qwik Guide can be found on our web-site www.dyplast.com under the resources drop down.

Dyplast Reopens after Hurricane Irma

Dyplast and our employees very much appreciate the thoughts and prayers so many of you offered to us and indeed all in the path of Hurricane IRMA. All of our personnel are safe although a number still do not have electricity and water.

The Miami plant sustained minimal damage, and we appreciated the efforts that our staff made to be at the plant this morning. They came in spite of personal hardships.

Dyplast anticipates being operational on or before Friday September 15, 2017. We still have spotty telephone service at the site.

We further anticipate that we will be back to normal operations next week fulfilling all orders. If you had already placed orders before Dyplast suspended operations these shipments will have priority.

Thank you for your patience. Please contact your Account Manager if you cannot get through to Customer Service, and you can always contact me directly via my cell.

Dyplast publishes new article, "Logical Thinking" in LNG Industry Magazine

Dyplast Products’ new article in LNG Industry Magazine titled "Logical Thinking" is an examination of the complexities surrounding insulant performance at cryogenic temperatures.

Physical properties of a particular insulant are often measured only at ambient temperatures. This article aims to use logical thinking to examine the performance of insulants at LNG (cryogenic) temperatures.

Fortunately, standards such as ASTM and CINI increasingly require physical properties to be measured at cryogenic temperatures, so that in the future such logical extrapolations may be less necessary.

Dyplast Blog: Clarity in IIAR 2016 Conference Technical Papers

One of Dyplast's efforts over the past years has been to advocate for clarity and full disclosure of technical and empirical information - - not only in Dyplast literature but also in literature generally within the public domain. Dyplast's recent Technical Bulletins, Qwik Guides, and Articles (e.g. LNG Industry Magazine) set good examples.

Thus we feel we must comment on a Technical Paper presented at the recent IIAR Conference in Orlando titled: "Hygrothermal Analyses of Ammonia Refrigeration Pipe Insulation Systems" which contains misinformation. The Paper represents that it used computer modeling to predict moisture content that would accumulate in various insulation materials on ammonia refrigeration pipe over long periods, up to 10 years. Pipe insulation scenarios with and without vapor retarders were modeled.

In general, we offer that readers should always be cautious when evaluating conclusions from computer modeling software that are contrary to empirical evidence and logical thought processes.

Dyplast's most pertinent comments include:

Point #1: The Paper states it used 1.8 lb/ft3 polyisocyanurate (PIR) as its test specimen; to our knowledge this density of PIR is very rarely, if ever, used in ammonia refrigeration pipe applications. More commonly it is 2.0 or 2.5.

Point #2: The Paper predicts that over ten years, without a vapor retarder, the moisture content of the PIR insulant would be about 90% by volume. First of all, ammonia refrigeration systems present challenging problems, and the installation guidelines for virtually ALL insulants require a vapor retarder - - and more often a vapor barrier. Yet even without a vapor retarder, the claim of 90% moisture by volume lacks credibility. 90% by volume is over 3000% by weight, meaning the 1.8 lb/ft3 insulant would weight 56 lb/ft3. To our knowledge, a moisture content at this absurd level has never been recorded, and frankly appears impossible.

Point #3: The Paper indicates a thermal conductivity of 0.187 Btu.in/hr.ft2°F at 10°C was utilized in the calculations, which does not even meet ASTM C591 Standards (≤ 0.18), and thus could not be used on an ammonia refrigeration system. The k-factors of ISO-C1/2.0 and 2.5 meet ASTM C591 requirements.

Point #4: The Paper does not explain how the computer model works or to what extent the outputs have been validated against real-life scenarios. Dyplast may address this in a future Technical Bulletin.

What You Should Know About Thermal Conductivity and Aging of Low-Temperature Mechanical Insulation

12 June 2014

Technical Bulletin 0414

What You Should Know About Thermal Conductivity and Aging of Low-Temperature Mechanical Insulation

This Technical Bulletin is another in Dyplast's series to provide objective information to decision-makers and end-users on important issues related to mechanical insulation (i.e. insulation for equipment). Although technically intense in some paragraphs, this Technical Bulletin objectively encapsulates more than can be gleaned from other documents generally available.

Thermal aging is a term that refers to the tendency of some insulants to lose some thermal resistance over time - - predominantly due to the very slow diffusion of low-thermal-conductivity cellular gases out of the cells within the insulation, only to be replaced by "air" with higher thermal conductivity. Since thermal aging is so often used as an argument for or against a particular insulation, it is important to understand this somewhat complex phenomenon.

It is even more important to understand that aged polyisocyanurate still has better thermal conductivity than other insulants that may not age.

Dyplast responds to receiving NIA's Theodore H. Brodie Safey Award

Dyplast CEO Ted Berglund responds to receiving NIA’s
Theodore H. Brodie Distinguished Safety Award.

"Our safety team was very excited to be part of NIA's safety award program and to get the detailed analysis of our safety program. This feedback helped our team improve Dyplast's program and resulted in a platinum award in our second year. The feedback helped Dyplast improve our employee participation and reduced our insurance costs. Our insurance broker informed us that the carrier considered this award during the underwriting process. But the most important benefit was the pride in recognition of the team's efforts. Everyone at Dyplast believes that this award program, including the process of reviewing our program and receiving feedback, is a true benefit to our company."

-Ted Berglund, President & CEO, Dyp/ast Products, LLC

The award is named in honor of NIA Past President Ted Brodie, who worked tirelessly for many decades before his death in 2010 to create a greater awareness of the need for safe working conditions. M r. Brodie first chaired the association's Health and Safety Committee in 1967, and he received N IA's President's Award in 1988. M r. Brodie was the President and CEO of New England Insulation Co., Inc. in Canton, Massachusetts, for 50 years.
